Halloween is not just a costume festival as you see it, this holiday also contains many unique and strange customs that not everyone knows.
The trick-or-treating ritual
Trick-or-treating is a custom for children during Halloween in many countries. On this day, children dressed up in bizarre costumes go from house to house singing and dancing, knocking on the door to meet the host and saying “trick-or-treat” – if they want to. If I don't play bad, treat us to something (can be candy or coins).
Not sure, but it is believed that this ritual originated in North America and was later adopted by many countries. Although there was a time when this special ritual was stopped, but now this game has started to re-emerge like alcohol.
Must wear horse head hat and fur coat on Halloween
One of the strange customs on Halloween is that the tribes in Germany and France often wear a gargoyle and animal skin to be able to connect with the spirits of the dead. On this day, people will go all out and dress up as the evilest spirit. They smeared or painted their faces with gruesome lines and wore a horse's head made of wood (imitating a horse skull) to add horror, making the festival more lively.
Jack Lantern Decoration
The ghostly pumpkin lanterns with shimmering colors are known as the symbol of the Halloween festival. But few people know that pumpkin is not the only and first choice to create Halloween lanterns. Radishes and potatoes are the only choices for this holiday. In the old days in England and Ireland, people used turnips to make lamps to scare away the spirit of Jack or other spirits in the night.
After this custom was introduced to the United States, pumpkins began to be used as they are today for the simple reason of being cheaper. People buy pumpkins, hollowed out the intestines, hewn the outer shell into the shape of a face, with enough eyes, nose, and mouth to form a lantern, called Jack-o'-Lantern.
Black cats are not allowed to appear on Halloween
Black cats have always been associated with witchcraft since the Middle Ages in Europe. Many people believe that black cats are close subordinates of witches, so on Halloween, families often do not allow black cats to appear in the house or even accept their presence. in October for fear that it will bring bad luck to them.
Light a fire on Halloween night
During the Halloween festival, people light a fire in the hope that the sun will shine again and stay longer, helping to produce a bountiful harvest. These bonfires attract animals that form the night legends of the Tans such as mosquitoes, owls, and bats. This is also the light that keeps people away from evil spirits.
The fire was also a way of encouraging fairies to come out of the graves and walk with the living. They will dress in masquerade, costumes and masks that will confuse evil spirits or help keep them away.
