Mysterious dishes on Halloween

Like other holidays, during Halloween, people often eat some dishes that are unique and have special meaning for the occasion.

Soul cake

This cake will be sent to strangers' homes at random. The simplicity of the cake symbolizes souls, expecting a prayer for lost loved ones from the recipient of the cake. For a family, the more bread received, the more prayers they prayed.

Although most of the recipients of this cake are strangers, bereaved families believe that the silence of a stranger for their family will help the deceased person to be able to pass more quickly. Soul cakes taste like regular waffle cookies, often with raisins added, arranged in a cross shape. The cake has a special flavor, so that the children can still fully enjoy the cake after eating the candies they ask for in the pumpkin. For that reason, children often choose it to have their last meal on Halloween.

Boxty pancakes

Boxty is an Irish potato pancake, one of the three main dishes on Halloween. This cake consists of mashed potatoes, chopped potatoes, and potato chips. With such a blend, this dish has an extremely eye-catching appearance without losing the traditional flavor of a real pancake.

Boxty is usually eaten with greasy cream of the Greeks, sugar water made from pine trees and fruit and vegetables are chopped to decorate around.

Colcannon

Colcannon is also a traditional dish of the Halloween season. What is especially interesting about this dish is that the cook has secretly hidden a coin or a small charm inside the dish. If the eater finds that coin, he or she will have a lot of luck in the future, just like the lucky cake often seen in movies.

When an amulet is discovered in a colcannon, the amulet is believed to partially determine the finder's future. For example, if we find a bracelet then that person (especially a woman) will have to be single in the near future. But this is just a game on Halloween, helping to bring a little surprise and a sense of tradition to ordinary people.

Legend has it that the way to dispel the charm is also very simple, just put Colcannon in an oversized sock like the one used for Christmas and hang it in front of the door, and at that moment the future husband will appear.

Pumpkin soup

Pumpkin lanterns are a symbol of Halloween, and this soup made from this ingredient is also an indispensable dish in the last days of October. In each region, each country has recipes. There are different soups, the most popular is still pumpkin soup cooked with beef or lamb with diced pumpkin and other vegetables and then added milk or cream.

Apple candy

One of the customs of Halloween is handing out candy to children. Therefore, candy becomes an indispensable dish in the spooky night, especially apple candy which is loved by children. The apples that are dipped in syrup or red sugar are very beautiful and delicious.

Barnbrack

Similar to Colcannon, Barnbrack cake also hides a game that the naughty cook mixes into his brainchild. Barnbrack is just like a normal sponge cake, it tastes like grapes and is dry like a muffin. But the special thing about this cake is that inside the cake hides a ring, and the person enjoying it will have to wait until the end of the meal to see who is the owner of that ring.

Traditionally, the ring will be placed in the center of the cake and if anyone finds it, between then and the end of the year they will get married. Currently, there are many lucky charms that are substituted for the ring to avoid the effectiveness of this game for young people who do not want to get married.
